[SMM Survey: Resumption Continues to Increase, Operating Rate and Capacity Utilisation Rate of Rolling Lines in Central China Maintain Growth] During the survey period (February 25 - March 3), the operating rate and capacity utilisation rate of rebar and wire rod rolling lines in steel mills in the Central China region both increased.

Operating Rates and Forecasts of Construction Steel Production Lines in Central China Steel Mills

During the survey period (February 25 - March 3), the operating rates and capacity utilisation rates of rebar and wire rod rolling lines in Central China steel mills increased.

Data Source: SMM

During the survey period (February 25 - March 3), the operating rates and capacity utilisation rates of rebar rolling lines in Central China steel mills increased.

Specifically, rolling lines in Hunan Province maintained normal production during this period; one additional rolling line resumed production in Henan Province, while two EAF steel mills in Hubei Province resumed production, with two rolling lines resuming simultaneously. No new maintenance activities were reported, resulting in a continued increase in rebar supply and operating rates in the region. Regarding in-plant inventory, as downstream demand gradually recovered, some steel mills in the region increased direct supply shipments, leading to a slight decline in overall in-plant inventory.

Rebar production in Central China is expected to see a slight increase next week, primarily due to extended operating hours and improved capacity utilisation rates at certain steel mills in Hubei and Henan provinces.

During the survey period (February 18 - February 24), the operating rates and capacity utilisation rates of wire rod rolling lines in Central China steel mills increased.

Specifically, normal production was maintained in Hunan and Henan provinces during this period, while a steel mill in Hubei Province adjusted its production plan, with one additional rolling line resuming production, driving an increase in wire rod supply in the region. Regarding in-plant inventory, steel mills maintained normal shipments, resulting in a slight decline in wire rod in-plant inventory during this period.

Wire rod production in Central China is expected to continue increasing in the next period, mainly due to the completion of temporary maintenance on a rolling line at a steel mill in Hubei Province, which is set to resume production, contributing to a certain level of growth.

Before the holiday, the black chain is unlikely to see a trend-driven market [SMM Steel Industry Chain Weekly Report].
This week, ferrous metals were in the doldrums, with coking coal and coke staging a mid-week rise. At the beginning of the week, financial markets experienced sharp fluctuations, dragging down sentiment in the ferrous chain and leading to a pullback in futures. Mid-week, Indonesia's cut to coke production quotas drove coking coal and coke futures to lead the gains, though the impact was more pronounced on thermal coal, while coking coal's rise was largely sentiment-driven and short-lived. In the latter part of the week, finished products continued their seasonal inventory buildup, and support from the raw material side weakened, causing the entire ferrous chain to pull back. In the spot market, with the Chinese New Year holiday approaching, purchasing activity slowed down further, with end-users only making limited, as-needed purchases at low prices.
